wow [18 Jan 2008|09:59am]
[ mood | worried ]

I got a tarot card reading yesterday. It was weird I've always wanted to do it but I was too scared, now I wish I hadn't gone. Let me just say that the woman i went to is someone that was recommended to me by a good friend, her and her whole family have been going to her for a while and she's always been pretty accurate and she doesn't rip people off. With that being said this is what happened...

I walked in and the place was very intimidating, it had a lot of dolls and altar type things with a lot of empty and half full liquor bottles like offerings for the dolls which i'm guessing are her spirit guides. Anyway, she started out by telling me about my ex and she was right on point. She described what happened exactly ,how we broke up with details and even described what he looks like. Then, after she had my attention she told me that I was cursed. Yes that's right CURSED. She said someone didn't want me to be born or something like that and they cursed me before I was even born and thats why ive had such bad luck all my life and all my relationships were going to be bad like my last one if i don't get rid of that. She also said thats why i've had such bad nightmares all my life (and i do but i dont admit it often since no one past the age of 5 should be having nightmares). She said she was getting the name tita or tito, which is what we called my grandparents (moms side). I don't really know what to think, at the moment I got really scared, now that i think about it i think its kinda silly but she was right about so many other things.

She also asked me if I had almost drowned when i was little, and i did. I fell in a pool when I was too young to know how to swim and that was the first and only time I got spanked. I never thought of it like a huge defining moment in my life but i wonder why she brought that up. she told me my angel was named Luis and asked me if i had a little brother who died or something. at first i said no, but then i remembered my mom had a miscarriage after i was born. I dont know if thats what she was talking about but she said that was Luis and hes watching over me. I can't ask my mom about these things because i'm pretty sure she will freak out about me getting my cards read, but i wonder if thats true.
I don't know, she told me a lot more things some good, most bad. I went with 2 other people and they didn't get bad news like me. it was a pretty bad idea for me to go because I cant stop thinking about the possibility that i might be cursed and no matter what i do my life is gonna suck, i know that sounds stupid but what if its true? I dont even know if anybody reads this thing anymore...

I just have to say I had the honor to listen to Dr. Maya Angelou speak today, and it was absolutely amazing. She has truly inspired me, and I just have to say if you aren't already familiar with her- read her books and her poetry because she is that good!

IMMIGRANT STUDENT PROTEST IN DEFENSE OF IN-STATE TUITION [29 Jun 2006|06:01pm]
*********edit*************
IMMIGRANT STUDENT PROTEST IN HOUSTON
12 Noon, Monday, July 3, 2006
HCC CENTRAL CAMPUS: 1300 HOLMAN

IMMIGRANT STUDENTS PROTEST IN DEFENSE OF IN-STATE TUITION
Houston, Tx. Immigrant students in Houston have mobilized in protest of Republican led attacks on HB 1403- a law that grants in-state tuition to students who have completed at least three years in a Texas high school. A repeal of this law would create a serious impediment to immigrant students who wish to attend college since many come from low-income families and would not be able to afford the significantly higher out-of-state tuition rates for Texas colleges and universities. Members of JIFM- Jovenes Inmigrantes por un Futuro Mejor (Young Immigrants for a Better Future) plan to demonstrate in front of Congressman Culbersons Houston office; John Culberson is one of the sponsors of Federal legislation that would withhold federal funds from colleges and universities that would allow immigrant students to pay in-state tuition.

Students will protest dressed in CAPS and GOWNS and with HANDS TIED BEHIND THEIR BACKS to symbolize how such anti-immigrant legislation would negatively affect students who are seeking to attend colleges and universities in Texas.

House Bill would require HPD to enforce immigration
Body: Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

Houston police would have to start enforcing federal immigration laws or potentially lose millions in crime-fighting money under a local lawmaker's measure that passed the House today.

An appropriations bill that cleared the House contains an amendment by Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston, that would cut off federal law enforcement funds to cities that have what Culberson characterizes as "sanctuary policies" for illegal immigrants.

The measure will not become law unless it clears the Senate and is signed by President Bush.

Houston which announced an $18 million federal crime-fighting grant about the time the bill passed the House meets Culberson's definition because police do not ask the immigration status of residents they stop or detain

internship [17 May 2006|09:57pm]
I had an interview today at Catholic Charities for an internship and I unofficially got it. Im really happy, i used to not be interested in that place b/c i thought it was a religious organization but its not really. I guess its sort of like the YMCA, its based on Christian principles but they arent there to preach. Anyway, its great they deal with so many social justice issues but I will get to work on my 2 favorites which are adoptions and helping immigrants as well as working to change legislation for comprehensive immigration reforms.
I also have an interview tomorrow at East End Life Center, they deal with health care for the hispanic community in the 6th ward. im excited about that too, ive heard a lot of great things about that place...but we'll see.

SIT-IN [28 Mar 2006|08:11pm]
April 4th
All college and higschool students - SIT-IN
walk out of your classes and sit in as a community who's voice and presence demands reckoning with. The senate judiciary committee has taken a step to ammend the ridiculous bill that passed in the House that would have criminalized immigrants and those who give them humanitarian aid. But we need to send the message that this is NOT ENOUGH. Senators who will vote and debate on this bill need to realize that we as students demand justice in the form of the Dream Act and Amnesty for the 12 million immigrants who are contributing daily to this society.
SIT IN WITH US

spread this to as many people as you can - highschool students and college students unite!!!

UH students will sit in the area infront of the MD Anderson Library!!

are our taxes illegal too? [27 Mar 2006|09:53pm]
Today was the Louise Gluck poetry reading at the Alley Theatre (the one I have been waiting for since october) I wasn't able to go b/c I had a test at that time but in the afternoon she went to UH for a question/answer thing so I got to see her there. I have met and talked to many famous people before, but I have to say I was star struck for the first time today! She is my absolute favorite poet and to tell you the truth I didn't even know she was still alive when I first came across her work. She was completely the opposite from what I expected her to be but it was great hearing about what her poetry means to HER. I am so happy I got this experience- I know so many people who would have killed to meet her, and I got the chance!

also, saturday was Walk for a Dream, you might have heard about it...it was great about 6,000 people showed up and it felt so to be part of it! here are some pics
I helped make that sign
